Ayah 1بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
English Translation
NAY! I call to witness this land –

Ayah 2وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ
English Translation
this land in which thou art free to dwell -
3
Ayah 3وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ
English Translation
and [I call to witness] parent and offspring:
4
Ayah 4لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ
English Translation
Verily, We have created man into [a life of] pain, toil and trial.
5
Ayah 5أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ
English Translation
Does he, then, think that no one has power over him?
6
Ayah 6يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا
English Translation
He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!"
7
Ayah 7أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
English Translation
Does he, then, think that no one sees him?
8
Ayah 8أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ
English Translation
Have We not given him two eyes,
9
Ayah 9وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ
English Translation
and a tongue, and a pair of lips,
10
Ayah 10وَهَدَيْنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجْدَيْنِ
English Translation
and shown him the two highways [of good and evil]?
11
Ayah 11فَلَا ٱقْتَحَمَ ٱلْعَقَبَةَ
English Translation
But he would not try to ascend the steep uphill road...
12
Ayah 12وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلْعَقَبَةُ
English Translation
And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road?
13
Ayah 13فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
English Translation
[It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin],
14
Ayah 14أَوْ إِطْعَٰمٌۭ فِى يَوْمٍۢ ذِى مَسْغَبَةٍۢ
English Translation
or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger,
15
Ayah 15يَتِيمًۭا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ
English Translation
of an orphan near of kin,
16
Ayah 16أَوْ مِسْكِينًۭا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍۢ
English Translation
or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust –
17
Ayah 17ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِٱلْمَرْحَمَةِ
English Translation
and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion.
18
Ayah 18أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ
English Translation
Such are they that have attained to righteousness;
19
Ayah 19وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ
English Translation
whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages – they are such as have lost themselves in evil,
20
Ayah 20عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌۭ مُّؤْصَدَةٌۢ
English Translation
[with] fire closing in upon them.
